During the event, various 5G use cases and innovations were presented, illustrating the potential of 5G to transform businesses, enhance consumer experiences, and support national growth.
Andres Vicente, Head of Ericsson Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, emphasized the importance of 5G in boosting the Philippines' digital infrastructure. He explained how 5G can enable new innovations and speed up the country's digitalization efforts. According to Vicente, research shows that a 10% increase in mobile broadband adoption can lead to an economic growth boost of up to 0.8%.
At the Ericsson Imagine Live 2024 event, 5G use cases were divided into four main zones:
5G for Consumers: This zone showcased how 5G can enhance consumer experiences, such as with the "Immersive Sports Fan" demo, where a feature-rich app allows sports clubs to connect with fans more deeply.
5G for Enterprises: Demos in this zone demonstrated how industries like mining, wind farms, and oil refineries can use 5G to improve worker safety and efficiency. Ericsson also showcased the potential of 5G for connected vehicles, which could revolutionize transportation.
Shape Our Future Together: This zone highlighted high-bandwidth use cases from brands like Toyota and Sony, showing how 5G and Network APIs can be leveraged for growth. Additionally, the "Teaching with Technology" program displayed how 5G-enabled virtual reality (VR) tools can make education more interactive.
Programmable Networks: In this zone, Ericsson presented how 5G can enable communication service providers to offer premium services with guaranteed quality. This technology helps deliver differentiated services to consumers, optimizing both performance and user experience.
5G allows technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cloud Computing to thrive, creating endless possibilities for consumers and businesses. Vicente also shared that Ericsson is eager to collaborate with the Philippine government to help build a robust 5G network that can support the country’s digital goals.
5G technology offers numerous benefits. For businesses, it can create new opportunities, enhance competitiveness, and reduce costs. Consumers will enjoy faster download speeds, smoother video streaming, more responsive online gaming, and immersive experiences. Additionally, 5G can improve areas like healthcare, allowing for better telemedicine services, and education, enabling remote learning.
Daniel Ode, Head of Ericsson Singapore, Philippines, and Brunei, mentioned that as 5G smartphones become more affordable and the 5G ecosystem matures, adoption rates in the Philippines will increase. By 2030, it's expected that 40% of mobile users in the country will be on 5G networks.
Worldwide, 5G is rapidly gaining traction. According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, global 5G subscriptions reached 1.9 billion by mid-2024 and are expected to hit 5.6 billion by 2029. In the Philippines, around 9% of mobile subscriptions are currently on 5G. This number is expected to rise as more investments in infrastructure are made.
The Philippines' geography and limited broadband infrastructure make it an ideal candidate for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), which uses 5G technology to provide internet in areas with little or no broadband services. A recent study by Ericsson Consumer Lab found that one in three households in the Philippines rely on mobile connectivity for their internet needs. With the right 5G offerings, the adoption of FWA could increase significantly, bringing faster and more reliable internet to rural areas.
Andres Vicente highlighted that investing in 5G networks is crucial for the Philippines to keep up with global trends. A strong 5G infrastructure will not only enhance business operations and consumer experiences but also make the country more attractive to foreign investors.
Ericsson is well-positioned to support this transition, with extensive experience in deploying 5G networks worldwide. Currently, 320 commercial 5G networks are operating globally, with Ericsson powering 166 of them. The company’s leadership in 5G technology has been recognized by industry experts, reinforcing its capability to help the Philippines on its digital journey.
As Ericsson continues to lead in global 5G development, its role in the Philippines’ digital future is becoming more critical. With the right investments in 5G infrastructure, the country is poised to experience faster digital transformation, benefiting businesses, consumers, and the overall economy. By embracing 5G, the Philippines can position itself as a tech-driven economy, ready to compete on a global scale.
