Mapúa’s journey is a testament to resilience, innovation, and academic excellence. Founded in 1925 with just 75 students, Mapúa has grown into a premier institution with campuses in Intramuros, Makati, Laguna, and Davao. Today, it serves thousands of students across a diverse range of programs, transforming from a niche technical school into a comprehensive university.
Initially offering only engineering and architecture, Mapúa now boasts more than 70 undergraduate programs, over 50 graduate courses, and a variety of short courses. These programs span a wide range of fields, from STEM disciplines to business, media studies, and health sciences.
“Our legacy is the product of collective efforts toward both local and international recognition. These efforts empower our educators to help students from all walks of life build pathways to promising careers,” said Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo, President and CEO of Mapúa,
Global Recognition and Academic Innovations
Mapúa’s status as a world-class institution is evident in its consistent appearance in prestigious global rankings. In 2022, it was included in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (WUR) and is also recognized as a Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 4-Star institution. These achievements place Mapúa among the top 100 universities in Southeast Asia, solidifying its reputation both locally and internationally.
But beyond accolades, the university focuses on delivering education that meets the demands of the modern workforce. Mapúa’s recent programs in energy engineering, data science, game development, financial technology, and business analytics ensure that students are equipped with industry-relevant skills.
“Our programs evolve with the industries we serve. We ensure students are future-proof, with both technical expertise and soft skills, which is why our graduates excel in board exams and are highly sought after by employers,” said Dr. Lilibeth Sabino, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. Over the past two decades, Mapúa has produced more than 400 topnotchers in national licensure exams.
Transforming Education with Technology and Collaboration
In October 2024, Mapúa achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first school system in the Philippines to receive Quality Matters (QM) certification for select online courses. This certification affirms the institution’s commitment to high-quality digital education.
Mapúa’s collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU) has also opened new doors. This partnership offers dual-degree programs and master’s degree pathways, enabling students to access global learning opportunities. Leveraging ASU’s expertise in artificial intelligence, Mapúa seamlessly integrates AI tools into its curriculum through modules such as Basic Prompt Engineering with ChatGPT and Scripting ChatGPT with Python.
To further expand access to education, Mapúa launched Mapúa Snippets and STEMTeach—free online resources designed to enhance elementary English and Math skills and provide professional development for STEM teachers, respectively. Both initiatives are available on the new MapúaX platform, which offers micro-credentials for lifelong learners.
Expanding Facilities and Preparing for the Future
As part of its centennial celebration, Mapúa continues to invest in new infrastructure. Recent expansions include a modern canteen and clinic on the Intramuros campus, state-of-the-art digital classrooms in partnership with Cisco, and a new Medicine wing at the Mapúa-ASU Human Health Learning and Innovation Center in Makati.
With CHED’s approval of transnational higher education (TNHE) programs, Mapúa students now have the opportunity to earn dual degrees or pursue master’s programs at ASU. This aligns with the university’s mission to produce globally competent graduates ready to thrive in a fast-changing job market.
A Grand Vision for the Next Century
Mapúa’s centennial celebration is not only a reflection of its storied past but also a springboard for future growth. As it steps into its next 100 years, the university aims to lead in digital transformation, innovation, and sustainable socio-economic growth.
“We will continue to harness advanced technologies and international collaborations to foster lifelong learning and prepare students for the careers of tomorrow,” Dr. Sabino emphasized.
Through its unwavering commitment to excellence, Mapúa University sets its sights on becoming a global leader in education, paving the way for generations of learners to create meaningful change in society.
